Am I Suitable For Laser Refractive Surgery?

Is it right for you?

While many cringe at the idea of having lasers pointed towards their eyes, laser refractive surgery has changed the lives of thousands of Australians, who have previously had to rely on glasses or contact lenses. There’s no doubting that laser surgery is a wonderful option to have - but are you suitable?

How does laser refractive surgery work?

Laser surgery uses a computer-assisted laser to reshape the cornea of the eye to correct common vision problems such as long-sightedness, short-sightedness and astigmatism.

It is a very quick procedure and most people who go in for the surgery are put in as out-patients, with the surgery usually lasting no more than fifteen minutes.

The most common type of laser surgery is called LASIK. It is a painless procedure whereby pulses of light are sent to your cornea while you look at a specific spot.

Am I suitable for laser refractive surgery?

Not everyone is suitable for laser refractive surgery. There are several types of laser surgery, so if you are not suitable for one there is a chance you may be suitable for another type.

Eye conditions such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism are usually suitable for some type of laser refractive surgery, but it will depend on a range of factors.

Some reasons why you may not be eligible for laser eye surgery include:

  • If you are in your early twenties or younger, as your eyes may not have fully developed
  • You have certain health problems
  • You have dry eyes, large pupils or thin corneas
  • Your prescription has changed in the past year
  • You are pregnant

Where can I find out more information?

If you want to find out more about laser refractive surgery, speak to your optometrist. While they do not perform the surgery, they will be able to discuss with you your eligibility and refer you to another doctor if you want to pursue.

Always visit your Toowoomba optometrist at least every two years to maintain good eye health and vision.
