A Sweet Solution for Dry Eye

With the global prevalence of dry eye disease up to 50%, it’s possible that as you read this article, you’re experiencing some degree of dry eye yourself. The odd thing about dry eye, is that it can often go unnoticed and undiagnosed. One of the reasons for this is because dry eye disease is a complex condition, and doesn’t always result in the eyes feeling dry. Instead, you may experience symptoms such as:

  • Transiently blurred vision
  • Grittiness, stinging, or burning of the eyes
  • The sensation of a foreign particle being lodged in the eye
  • Watery eyes (yes, dryness can cause wateriness!)
  • Nothing at all! (Asymptomatic dry eyes)

For those who do have symptomatic dry eyes, you may have tried a number of lubricant eyedrops, which typically provide only temporary relief. So, if you’re on the search for a more effective drop, here’s one you may not have thought about yet – manuka honey.

More Than A Breakfast Condiment

Manuka honey is known to offer various healing properties, including antibiotic and anti-inflammatory actions. When formulated into an appropriate solution for the eyes (so don’t go grabbing that jar out of the pantry), it has been found to help reduce both signs and symptoms of dry eyes. Researchers noted that two-times daily use of the honey eyedrop resulted in lowered eye inflammation, improved tear stability, improved oil gland secretions, and reduced dry eye symptoms for the majority of study participants.
