Foods To Aid Good Overall Eye Health

Many factors contribute to the health of our eyes; a lot of these are genetic but some we can control. While the use of prescription glasses and contacts can combat existing sight problems, there are many foods you can include in your diet which may help to maintain good overall eye health. By being conscious of your eye health now, you can potentially avoid eye problems later in life!

Including foods that benefit your eye health may assist in warding off eye diseases and age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Below are some of our recommendations for foods to include in your diet that may help to maintain good eye health:

Fish

Fish (particularly salmon) is an incredible food to consume for eye health. Rich in healthy fats such as omega-3, fish is also credited with being able to help prevent dry eyes. Regardless of how you cook it, your eyes will still reap the benefits of regularly consuming fish.

Eggs

Eggs are rich in vitamin A, a nutrient known to contribute to good eye health and vision by protecting the front of the eye. Eggs are also rich in zinc which is a powerful antioxidant and can help protect against cell damage.

Almonds

Potent in vitamin E, almonds are another food to consider when searching for optimum eye health. Vitamin E may help guard against unstable molecules that can cause damage to the eye. If almonds aren’t for you, you can also get a dose of vitamin E through hazelnuts, peanuts and sunflower seeds.

Carrots

The benefits of carrots to your eye health are similar to that of eggs. Carrots have high levels of beta-carotene, which our bodies convert to vitamin A. Beta-carotene assists in reducing the oxidative stress that light puts on our eyes.

While including these foods in your diet won’t be a miracle cure and preventer to all future eye issues, they do have the ability to improve your overall eye health. Improving your eye health is a step in the right direction towards preventative measures for future eye problems. Before making any drastic changes to your diet, always be sure to consult your GP for guidance.
