How to Choose Glasses Frames (Hint: That's Literally Our Job)
I've lost count of how many patients have walked into the frame room, looked around at the wall of glasses, and said some version of the same thing.
I've lost count of how many patients have walked into the frame room, looked around at the wall of glasses, and said some version of the same thing.
I have no idea where to start.
I always just grab whatever's on sale.
Can you just pick for me?
And every single time, my answer is the same: yes. Absolutely yes. That is exactly what we're here for.
Choosing glasses frames is genuinely one of the parts of my job I enjoy most. It's also one of the things I think we do really well at Outlook Eye Centre - and I want to explain why, and what it actually looks like when someone helps you choose properly.
Why it feels so hard
Standing in front of a wall of frames and trying to choose a pair is a bit like standing in front of a buffet when you're not sure what you feel like. Too many options, no obvious starting point, and a nagging sense that you'll make the wrong call.
Here's the thing though: most people approach frame selection the wrong way, and it's not their fault. They pick up the frames that look interesting on the stand, try them on, pull a face, put them back. Or they buy the same style they've always had because at least they know that works. Or they go with whatever a friend said looked good once.
None of these approaches are terrible. But none of them are the best way to find a pair of glasses that genuinely suits you - your face, your features, your lifestyle, and yes, your prescription.
The frames that look amazing on the stand are often not the ones that look amazing on your face. That's not a you problem. It's just physics.
What we actually look at
When I sit down with someone to choose frames, there are several things I'm thinking about at once. Most of them have nothing to do with what's trendy.
Your face and features
We look at you as a whole. Your face shape, your proportions, your features, how everything sits together. It is less about following a formula and more about a trained eye knowing what works. There is no chart involved. We just look at you.
Your colouring
Skin tone, hair colour, and eye colour all influence which frame colours will make you look alive versus washed out. A warm tortoiseshell does something very different on someone with warm olive skin versus cool, fair skin.
Your prescription
This matters more than most people realise. High prescriptions (particularly strong minus lenses for myopia) do better in smaller frames, because a larger lens means a thicker, heavier result. We always think about what the finished glasses will look like - not just the empty frame.
Your lifestyle
Do you wear glasses all day at a computer? Are you chasing kids around? Do you care more about a professional look or a fun one? All of this shapes what we'll suggest.
What you actually want
This is not last on the list by accident. We listen. If you tell us you want something bold, we'll find you something bold. If you want to blend in, we'll find you something understated. Our job is to translate what you want into what actually works on your face.
The honest bit
I'll be straight with you about something, because I think it's one of the things that makes a real difference to the experience of choosing glasses at an independent practice like ours.
We will tell you when frames don't suit you.
Not rudely. Not dismissively. But honestly. If you've picked up a pair that aren't doing you any favours, we'll say so - and we'll tell you why, and show you what does work instead.
This sounds obvious, but it's rarer than it should be. We're not here to sell you the most expensive pair in the room. We're not here to move stock. We're here to make sure you leave with glasses you're genuinely happy with - that suit you, that fit your face, that work with your prescription, and that sit in your price range.
We'll never oversell. We'll never push you towards something you don't need. But we will absolutely tell you when something looks great, because that matters too.
We will tell you when frames don't suit you. Honestly, not rudely. And then we'll find you the ones that do.
What about price?
We've deliberately built a frame range that has something for everyone - not just patients with a particular budget. We stock boutique brands that are genuinely hard to find anywhere else in Toowoomba, alongside accessible everyday options and everything in between.
What we don't do is steer people towards the expensive end for the sake of it. If a mid-range frame suits you better than the designer option, that's what we'll tell you. If the boutique pair is genuinely the right call, we'll show you why.
Appropriately priced and genuinely well-chosen - that's the standard we hold ourselves to.
A few of our favourites right now
We stock a wide range of brands, but there are a few we're particularly excited about at the moment.
- Dutz - Dutch eyewear with extraordinary colour and bold shapes. If you've always played it safe and want to try something different, start here. Shannon's personal favourite.
- Marc Vincent - beautifully made, timeless, the kind of frames that look just as good in five years as they do today.
- Vogue Eyewear - a perennial favourite at Outlook for good reason. Fashion-forward, flattering across almost every face shape, and genuinely accessible.
Come in and have a look. There's no pressure, no hard sell, and no judgment if you pick something up and immediately put it back down. That's all part of the process.
The bit most people don't realise
Choosing glasses is supposed to be enjoyable. It's one of those rare things where something functional - correcting your vision - also gets to be an expression of who you are.
The patients who leave happiest are usually the ones who came in saying they had no idea what they wanted, let us do our thing, and walked out with something they absolutely love.
That's what we're going for every single time.
