Is Screen Time Impacting Your Child’s Vision?

Screens are a big part of modern life – especially with school, homework, and downtime. But too much screen time may affect your child’s vision and overall health.

Some screen use is unavoidable, but excessive use has been linked to issues like digital eyestrain, disrupted sleep, increased risk of obesity, and even early signs of short-sightedness (myopia).

What are the risks?

  • Digital eye strain: Tired eyes, headaches, and blurred vision from long screen sessions.
  • Sleep problems: Screen use before bed can make it harder to fall asleep.
  • Obesity: More time on screens often means less physical activity.
  • Myopia (short-sightedness): Some research suggests a link between screen use and myopia in children.

How to protect young eyes:

  • Lead by example: Be mindful of your own screen habits.
  • Set limits:
    • Under 2 years: No screen time
    • Ages 2–12: Up to 1 hour per day
    • Teens: Up to 2 hours per day
  • Take breaks: Follow the 20/20/20 rule – every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds.
  • Encourage outdoor play: Time outdoors helps support healthy eye development – and it’s great for overall wellbeing.
